Same Same But Different #1
Thai words that are spelled differently but sound the same!
“Homophones” (คำพ้องเสียง /kam póng sĭiang/) are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings, such as two, too and to. In Thai language, we do have those kinds of words too! DON’T freak out, most of the time we still understand from the context, but sometimes there might be a little confusion.
ซ่อม ส้อม
sôm sôm
[to] repair fork
พ่อซ่อมรถอยู่
/pôr sôm rót yòo/
Dad is fixing the car.
ผมชอบใช้มีดกับส้อมกินอาหาร
/pŏm chôp chái mêet gàp sôm gin aa-hăan/
I like to use knives and forks to eat food.
ไม่ ไหม้
mâi mâi
no; [to] not burn
เอาไข่เจียวไม่ไหม้
/ao kài jiieow mâi mâi/
(I) want an omelet that doesn’t burn.
เอาไข่เจียวไหม้ ๆ
/ao kài jiieow mâi mâi/
(I) want a burnt omelet.
ว่าย ไหว้
wâai wâai
[to] swim [to] wai (to show respect in Thai)
เด็ก ๆ ชอบว่ายน้ำ
/dèk dèk chôp wâai náam/
Children love to swim.
เด็ก ๆ ไหว้ผู้ใหญ่
/dèk dèk wâai pôo yài/
Children pay respects (wai) to adults.

grandma grass
คุณย่าตัดหญ้าที่สวนหลังบ้าน
kun yâa dtàt yâa têe sŭuan lăng bâan
Grandma mows the grass in the backyard.
คั่น ขั้น
kân kân
[to] separate step
เขานั่งคั่นกลางระหว่างเรา
/kăo nâng kân glaang rá-wàang rao/
He sat (separate) in the middle between us.
บันไดมี 200 ขั้น
/ban-dai mee sŏng-rói kân/
The stairs have 200 steps.
ทำ ธรรม
tam tam
[to] do; make justice; morality
วันนี้เขาไม่ทำอะไรเลย
/wan née kăo mâi tam à-rai loiie/
Today, he didn’t do anything.
เขาเป็นคนมีคุณธรรม
/kăo bpen kon mee kun-ná-tam/
He is a moral person.
กำ กรรม
gam gam
[to] hold; clench karma; action
เขากำมือแน่น
/kăo gam meu nâen/
He clenched his fist tightly.
เขาเชื่อในบาปกรรม
/kăo chêuua nai bàap gam/
He believed in sin and karma.
ทุก ทุกข์
túk túk
every [to] suffer
แม่ทำงานทุกวัน
/mâe tam ngaan túk wan/
Mom works every day.
แม่เป็นทุกข์เพราะทำงานหนัก
/mâe bpen túk prór tam ngaan nàk/
Mom is suffering because of hard work.
สัตว์ สัตย์ (ซื่อสัตย์)
sàt sàt (sêu sàt)
animal honest; loyal
หมาเป็นสัตว์ที่ซื่อสัตย์มาก
/măa bpen sàt têe sêu sàt mâak/
Dogs are very loyal animals.
สุก สุข (ความสุข)

Mary is happy because today is Friday.

Dad drives (car) to work every day.

/mâe rót náam dtôn mái nai sŭuan lăng bâan/
Mom is watering the plants in the backyard.
อาหารไทยมีรสเปรี้ยว เค็ม หวานและเผ็ด
/aa-hăan tai mee rót bprîieow kem wăan láe pèt/
Thai food has a sour, salty, sweet and spicy flavor.
